An African American Cotillion is a formal event and leadership program that celebrates the growth, achievements, and social development of young African American men and women. Traditionally, it includes etiquette training, community service, leadership development, and cultural enrichment, all leading up to a grand ball where participants—often called debutantes (young women) and beaus or escorts (young men)—are presented to society.
For young men, like in a "Mr. Jr. Cotillion", the program focuses on character development, leadership, and preparing them to be respectful, confident, and active members of their communities. It’s a way to honor traditions while teaching valuable life skills such as public speaking, social etiquette, and responsibility.
The first official official cotillion took place in New Orleans, LA in 1895.
